Dell Latitude 3330: RAM problem laptop not working

I recently upgraded my ram from 4gb to 8gb after receiving some ram from a friend. After installing the ram, i turned the pc on, but the laptop came up with a black screen, before shutting down. I checked all the specs - laptop is compatible with SO-DIMM DDR3L which is the ram that I received (I think). After putting taking out one of the ram the laptop turned on but the screen was all messed up. The screen was green and red and was creating a split image of the Dell logo on startup except that it was green and red and was constantly moving. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
