Dell Inspiron 15-7559 Repair: plastic housing broke near monitor's left hinge. help: finding parts

Hi boys and girls

My girl friend's laptop's outer shell broke close to the left hinge of the monitor (pictures on google drive: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1yioxZ-...). Dell charged 68$ to ship the laptop to repair center for inspection and 98$ for replacing the bottom and palm rest plastic housing (part labor and tax). they didn't acknowledge this as a defect because it doesn't happen often enough. My girl friend uses this laptop to run SAS so it's just under normal daily use and my girlfriend claimed she never dropped it. This failure seems very weird to me.

I wish I could find the housing from ebay or ifixit so I can DIY the repair if this happens again. but I don't know the part number. Could someone teach me how to find part number of a laptop part(housing for this case, but sometimes fan and other parts broke too) and the best place to find them? I think someone else will benefit from it too.

Thanks a lot!

Dell Inspiron 17R SE 7720: Is my laptop power failure fatal?

I my laptop is one of these: http://www.dell.com/support/home/uk/en/u...

I was in the middle of a game on AC power when it powered off instantly, as if it had been on battery only and gone dead flat.

Pressing the power button has no effect. No lights, no fan spin, no boot attempt at all.

I checked the power supply and battery were seated ok and all looked fine, but no joy.

I then went through various troubleshooting steps:

Remove battery, AC only

Remove AC, battery only

remove ram

remove hdd

remove WiFi card

remove Blu-ray drive

No effect, still no life at all. I had read that bad hardware could have been preventing boot.

Then:

Checked AC adapter output voltage. 19.5V

Tried to check battery voltage, very difficult due to the connectors. It appeared to be giving me 0.1V or less, but I'm not convinced I was able to get a decent connection.

I then noticed that if I plugged the AC adapter in to the laptop then removed it the voltage drops to 1.2 V ish and slowly drops down towards 0.

It looked like the adapter was tripping after being plugged in so I wanted to test if it was the adapter or the laptop. I rigged up a bulb as a makeshift load, about 20-40W draw and it lit fine and the adapter voltage was steady afterward.

This made me suspect a DC in problem or short on the motherboard as if the adapter was faulty I'd have expected to see it cutting out under my test load (since it does this even when plugged into the laptop with no battery to charge).

Finally I removed the motherboard to inspect it but can see no obvious sign of damage.

So, my own thought is that likely the mobo is dead and that possibly the battery is suspect too.

A replacement mobo is probably around £100 + battery but I'm hesitant to start spending money on it. Concerned that I could end up breaking new components if I'm wrong etc.

Question time:

Comments on what I've found

agree/disagree about my conclusions?

anything else to try?

is it worth trying to replace the motherboard?

anything I've missed?

Any suggestions very welcome!!

Dell Inspiron 13-7359: Keyboard removable from palm rest?

My keyboard broke for this device so I've just bought the keyboard only.

However I am unsure on my purchase since all online repair guides show replacement of keyboards attached to palm rest for this device.

I just want to know if it is possible to remove the keyboard from the palm rest, and if so, are there any guides / resources for doing so? All I see are the "palm with keyboard" ones. Thanks!

Dell Inspiron 15-7537: How do I disassemble just the screen?

I have a Dell Inspiron 15-7537 with a touch screen. the entire screen shows tiny dots (for lack of technical term). Connecting an external display works and looks perfect so I know its not the video card. The dots show on boot up too. I can press to the left of the dell logo on the screen and it gets a little better. Im thinking maybe its a bad cable or loose cable at the inverter (given that the inverter is behind the dell logo). I can't find anywhere on the net where it explains how to disassemble just the lcd screen or if its even possible. It doesn't have a plastic bezel like many windows pcs. the screen assembly looks more like whats on a macbook pro. anyone know

1. what may cause these dots and how to fix it? or

2. how to get in to just replace the touchscreen digitalized or lcd inverter?
