Dell Inspiron 6000: How do I fix my broken audio-out jack?

I have a problem that's been pestering me for quite a while. About three years ago I began to intermittently lose sound from the intergrated speakers on my Dell Inspiron 6000. This loss became more and more frequent, and as of now I cannot play the sound from the onboard speakers unless I place something into my headphone or microphone jacks. To be more descriptive, I take a 1/8" headphone jack plug and stick it in about halfway, then angle it downward and hold it there. I usually use my wallet to prop against the plug -- it's thick enough to hold it in place, but not too thick to break the plug or jack. This, and only this, usually gets the sound to work from the external speakers.

The headphone jack used to work just fine otherwise, but has over time stopped transmitting sound more and more to the headphones.

About two years ago, I tore apart the whole enchilada. There were no broken wires anywhere, and the headphone/mic jacks were soldered to the motherboard. I looked around and nothing appeared to be burned out.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about fixing this problem? The laptop runs like a champ, even though it's approaching 4 years.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Dell Inspiron 6000: Battery tear-down and refurbishment

Can I disassemble my Dell Li-ion 11.1V 7200mAh battery and manually replace the cells instead of spending $100+ on a new battery from Dell? I tried an after-market battery once for about $45, but it failed within a few months. Thanks.

Dell Inspiron 6000: Battery pack refurbishing with new Li-Ion cells? Opening the battery?

Battery packs, original or substitute, are mighty expensive, and there is no guarantee how long the substitutes might last, since there is no way that one can figure out the manufacturer and quality of the cells inside the sealed battery pack when buying it. So it would certainly be worthwhile to refurbish the original Dell battery packs if at all possible.

Is there anyone who has been able to open a Dell Inspiron 6000 6-cell and/or 9-cell battery pack and re-close or seal it adequately, and can give or has given precise illustrated or video instructions on how to do so on YouTube or elsewhere? Replacing the depleted cells with fresh ones like Sanyo (best, with highest mAh) inside the battery pack would be a relatively easy project provided one is careful with the procedure and polarity.

But what is worrisome is that despite doing so, I have been given to understand that there is a special, sneaky electronic circuit in the battery pack which is intentionally programmed by Dell to block the PC's access to the battery cells(even if the cells are OK), after a specific number of hours of use or a specific number of recharge cycles, so even after changing the cells inside, the battery pack will remain dead, i.e. inaccessible....unless this circuit is reprogrammed. Can anyone please confirm this? If so, is the circuit reprogramming software available anywhere on the net? Or would the battery work if the circuit is bypassed? and with what limitations?

Dell Inspiron 6000: How do I extend the LCD screen cable?

Hi, my Dell has gotten a bit old and crotchety, and the keyboard has completely broken, so I decided to turn it into a wall mounted tablet, using a tablo pen to create a pseudo-touchscreen. However, I realized quite quickly that the cord connecting the LCD to the motherboard is really really short. Does anyone know what kind of cord this is, and how I can get an extender for it?

Thanks!

Dell Inspiron 6000: Needs a new battery-Where should I look?

Hello! I've got this 20 year old Inspiron 6000, and the battery is completely dead. As in the computer can't even detect the presence of a battery. I've gotten it to boot while using the power adapter, so it's definitely the battery (which I have taken out and reinstalled multiple times). It's really easy to replace it (all you have to do is pull a slider, and out it comes-ahem, Apple), so I have no concern about that. My only problem is finding one. I don't think Dell still manufactures those batteries. Does anyone know of a reputable seller that carries these batteries?

Dell Inspiron 6000: I can't raise the Wireless router

My wife, bless her, has changed the domestic broadband supplier and we've changed to their new router. After fixing problems at the BT phoneline exchange, the lan cables in the house work OK, but I can't sign in to the router. When I get to the window to type in the router key, the Dell just beeps and won't let me type.

The router is on Channel 9. I also notice an illuminated locked padlock on the Dell keyboard, bearing the number 9. Can't get it to go out.

And I can't track it down in the online manual.

Anyone else out there still using one of these laptops?
