Cingular 8125: Can' get into phone because capacitative buttons won't let me enter pw

I put a password on the lock screen to protect my phone. At some point the keypad buttons (capacitative) stopped working correctly. Press a 3, the 9 works. The 5 doesn't work at all, etc. As a result I can't get into my phone at all, and can't use it. I believe the phone works fine otherwise. ATT told me I would have to send the phone back to HTC and it wasn't worth the price. That was years ago. I'd like to donate the phone and wondering if there is a way now I could fix this myself. I've done several hard resets, but I worry about contact information left on the phone. I appreciate any information you can give me. Thank you.
