Apple Thunderbolt Display: How can I fix my display blacking out intermittently?

I've had the Apple Thunderbolt Display for a little more than a year, and it has started to intermittently go black for a few seconds at a time. When it does, I usually lose connection to my usb devices connected through the display. If I let it go on, it blanks more and more frequently until the system kernel panics.

So far, I've tried cleaning the contacts with rubbing alcohol. This made them more visually attractive, but did not solve the problem.

Second, I tried using another macbook pro, but it had the same issue.

I've noticed that the thunderbolt connector heats up significantly when it's in use. I'm wondering if there's a heat-related issue that could be causing a broken connection in the electronics inside the connector. Any thoughts?

How I can fix it? I really believe it's on the glass as I took a screen shot of this area and the scree shot show pretty clean I mean, no stain at all. Does it make sense?

I'm afraid to remove the glass before to be 100% sure.

Tks a lot,

Apple Thunderbolt Display: Display turn Black, after many times turn off and on, sometimes works

My Thunderbolt Display (A1407) stays black after connecting it to my iMac.

After many times unplug the power cable and plug it in again, the picture came back. Unfortunately, it disappears after 30 minutes and does not come anymore. The picture was good, no mistakes.

What could it be? Power cable to the iMac or power supply?

Has anyone else had this problem and how did you fix it?

What would be the most sensible to replace?

Many Thanks

I have troubleshooted this display and pinpointed the part pictured as the problem, I've confirmed it by replacing with a known good part and it restores the display to working however I am struggling to find a replacement part, where can I pick up a Controller board? does anyone have one spare even a faulty display with scratches, cracks or marks would do as this is a seperete piece

or alternatively is there a component on these that is prone to going I could replace?

Update (09/22/2016)

So I repaired today and all is working well, it's not difficult, out with the old and in with the new, probably the most awkward part is getting the LG panel off the housing, be very careful not to pull on the connected cables or you run the risk of pulling of the surface mounted connectors

So the back of the panel the area you are working on is at the top underneath that raised metal cover, there's lots of silver tape and black tape here and no matter how careful you are you will tear it (I did anyhow!)

There's only 4 screws holding this on, one of which is covered by black tape

Fold the cover away from you and let it stand up, the board is now held in place by the 2 conectors at the top with zif connectors, the LVDS cable and the 2 push out connectors, take care taking these out, the board should just lift away when these have been removed

Part number to check which revision you have to order the replacement part

Old at the top, replacement part below

Assemble in reverse order then you should be back working again

Apple Thunderbolt Display: Black screen, but fan and Magsafe operational, PSU pinout tested OK

All right, so I bought a dead Thunderbolt display 27” (for 7 EUR) and I want to fix it and would appreciate any help or comments.

What works:

Magsafe charging works.

The internal fan is running, and since it’s getting power and signal from the logic board, I reckon the logic board is not entirely dead.

What doesn’t work:

The display, USB etc is not recognised by the Macbook Pro. The display does not show any kind of image. The computer doesn’t even react (i e flicker) when the TB cable is inserted/pulled out. This MBP works perfectly with other Apple displays.

My questions:

Any tips on where to get hold of a Thunderbolt 2 cable to see if the internal one is bad? I don’t want to spend 25-30 EUR on a cable if that is not the issue.

If anyone has a replacement glass, I am interested in buying..

Is there any kind of fuses or similar safety feature that would cause the logic board to not power up?

Any tips on troubleshooting the logic board further?

Update (07/25/2022)

I successfully repaired the display!

The problem was the All-in-one-cable.

I suspected the cable after visually inspecting the PSU and logic board, which looked fine. I also measured correct voltages coming from the PSU, and also seeing that the logic board spun up the fan, so it seemed to be at least somewhat functional.

The AIO cable was 25 EUR from eBay and the display now works perfectly!

Apple Thunderbolt Display: Cable replaced. Everything ok, but no screen. What could be the cause?

The cable that comes out of the back of my Apple Thunderbolt Display was fraying. I decided that rather than risk a short at some point, I'd preemptively replace the cable. Upon iFixit teardown photos, I decided to replace the cable that comes out of the back of the screen myself instead of paying nearly $200 to get an Apple Service Provider to do it here in Bangkok. Bought the cable on AliExpress for $12. Replaced it. And ... no dice. Screen did not come on.

My setup

[MacBook Air] ---- [Thunderbolt Display] --- [Thunderbolt drive] --- [Cinema Display]

with a USB drive and Ethernet plugged into the back of the Thunderbolt Display

Already tried

Initial thoughts were that the cable was faulty. But then I noticed Ethernet came on, the USB drive was mounted, Thunderbolt drive was mounted and after a reboot the Cinema Display also come on. Obviously, the cable was working just fine.

Second thought was that I had neglected to reconnect some cables that connect the LCD panel to the main logic board. I checked. Seemed just fine.

Third was that perhaps the cable serial number was somehow tied to the main logic board. So I put the old cable back. Still no screen.

Tried to connect the screen using an external Thunderbolt cable, everything worked equally well but still no image on the screen.

Tried 30+ seconds and 3+ hours unplugged as a 'reset' of the screen. No change.

Rebooted my laptop. No change.

Plugged the Thunderbolt Display into the drive and then into the MacBook, so change the sequence of devices. No change.

System Information reports under "Thunderbolt" the whole chain of devices, but under "Graphics/Displays" shows only the internal screen and Cinema Display.

Using the newly-purchased cable as an external Thunderbolt cable works just fine too.

Question

Does anybody have any suggestions on what to try next?

Does the logic board go into some kind of lockdown mode when replacing the cable?

Are there more than 3 connecting flat cables + ground connection between the panel and the main logic board?

Although there is no reason to assume it has been, how do I test the LCD panel to still function given all these flat cable connectors?

Note: There are no Apple Stores here. Apple Authorised Service providers are no help. They suggested replacing the cable and the panel at a cost that is nearly the same as buying a new screen.

Apple Thunderbolt Display: Thunderbolt display power source blew up - worth trying to replace?

I plugged the Thunderbolt cable from the Apple Thunderbolt Display into my MacBook the other day, as I have done one thousand times before. There was a huge cracking sound - like a capacitor burned out or similar and the display went dead. Smoke and ozone smell - although no visible smoke. No response since. The MacBook is fine.

The powerboard the display was plugged into is also dead - no response on any outlet. All other devices plugged into the powerboard are OK.

What do you think the chances are that the display circuitry survived? Is it worth spending the money on a new power supply to test if it works?

Or, at least spending the money on the suction caps to tear the display down and visually inspect? Could you even tell from a visual inspection if the silicon got fried?

Thanks for your advice in advance.

Hi all,

Apple Thunderbolt Display: My monitor turns off and on intermittently.

I bought a used 27 inch Thunderbolt Display 4 months ago, in good condition to connect it to my 2020 mac mini m1 with Monterey 12.4 installed.

For the past week the monitor has been starting to switch on and off intermittently, often but not always when this happens the cable is very hot and sometimes the bottom of the screen too (without connecting anything to the hub this doesn't seem to overheat).

When the problem first appeared I tried upgrading the mac to 12.4 (from 12.3) thinking it was that, although it seems to have only gotten worse since then.

I'm not sure it's the Thunderbolt Display cable's fault that's causing these problems as I've tried using it on a 2011 macbook pro without then using the adapter and it doesn't seem to be causing any problems.

At this point it could be the adapter, like the cable or something else like a faulty component or firmware issue.

Does anyone have any ideas to solve the problem or at least identify the cause?

Apple Thunderbolt Display: 27" Thunderbolt display turned off after a few minutes(Please help!)

Right, I am using the quite old display manufactured from 2011.

If you want to say buying a dell monitor, please ignore this request.

This symptom happened a while ago and I really tried to figure out why, but I couldn’t find out. Btw, thanks a lot someone who created this forum! I got a lot of knowledge.

So, the problem happens just after few minutes later. When I unplugged it and connected it again, it sometimes fixed. However, it never continue more than 30 minutes. I already tried to connect display from another thunderbolt from back panel instead of all-in-one cable. It works but never continued neither. I replaced the All-in-one cable and there was no change. I replaced the power supply unit with my another apple cinema display(not Thunderbolt display), but it didn’t work. I found out the PSU is the same with the Cinema display.

The things that I can try from now is

1. replacing logic board

2. AC Power Inlet.

Can anyone succeed to fix 27” Apple Thunderbolt Display ever?

I reached out to local repair shop, but they asked me around $400 for fix.

Please help me!! I don’t have money for buying $5-6000 monitor!!!!
