Apple USB SuperDrive: What's the model number of this version of SuperDrive?

The latest Apple USB Superdrive, MD564ZM/A Model A1379, doesn't have the PATA connector for the internal slot-in optical drive. It's soldered to the USB wire directly. Therefore it's very difficult to replace the internal drive.

Apple Optical Drive: Salvaging a 2011 iMac CD Drive

I have a CD drive taken from a broken iMac (2011) that I hope to use with my Windows PC. To accomplish this I bought a USB adapter for a laptop CD drive (with mini SATA), and while the drive is receiving power, it doesn't seem to read disks with much reliability - sometimes only reading part of a disk's contents, other times my computer can see there is a drive attached but can't see the disk.

Needless to say, it's hardly usable like this. Is this a compatibility issue between the Apple drive and a Windows computer, or is there potentially a problem with the adapter? If the former, is it solvable with the right software/driver or is it impossible to solve?
