AirPort Extreme A1521: Can not reconnect cables to logic board?

I just opened my A1521 Airport Extreme to clean and lube the cooling fan, trying to solve the overheating problem. Everything has gone back together nicely until I got to the last step of connecting the two small connectors to the logic board. One of these goes to the indicator lamp, not sure about the other. After an hour of trying, I’ve had no success in getting the connectors to snap into place. The back of the connector is virtually smooth, so I don’t see how it is supposed to connect. It does not appear like the connectors broke when I removed them, but it seems like I’m trying to connect a smooth connector to a smooth surfaced circuit board. How are these supposed to connect?

Update (07/18/2021)

Dan, that’s exactly what happened, I can now clearly see that both parts of the connectors pulled off of the board. The tear down instructions gave several warnings about being careful to not break the connector, and I was impressed with how easily and cleanly mine came off. Perhaps I will add a comment about what happened here. I left the reset switch connected to the board, and instead disconnect the actual switch from the case. My problem is with the LED and whatever the other is directly next to the LED. What is that one?

AirPort Extreme A1521: New fan, high pitch noise

I just replaced the fan in my Airport Extreme today. Once i booted up the router, I'm now getting a high pitched noise. When I start the router, it initially doesn't make any noise. I can see the orange light, etc... But, once it starts "initializing", maybe 5 seconds after start, I get a constant high pitched noise. Since it's a brand new fan, I'm wondering if this is coil whine? If so, I don't understand how a new fan could cause this? Anyone have any ideas as to what's up? Or, maybe the new fan is just noisy? It's a sunon fan that i bought off ebay. Curious if anyone has any thoughts based on these symtpoms?

Update (09/23/24)

Doing some more research, I'm reading that sometimes replacement fans do have a high pitched noise. So, it might indeed be the new fan. It looks to be the same brand (Sunon) as the original, so I don't know why there would be noise. Very sad... Past my return period on this fan, too.

AirPort Extreme A1521: Thermal pad replacement comments?

I took my AirPort Extreme apart to give it a clean because it was full of dust. I thought I would remove the heat sinks just for interests sake. When I removed the heat sink I noticed it had a thermal pad between the sink and the Broadcom router chip. I was a little disappointed this was not mentioned in any of the tear downs as I like to replace thermal pads when I pull things apart. I had to put it back together as was but I am looking to replace the thermal pad. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also any suggestions on pad thickness? I was thinking 3mm from memory. IT seemed like a fairly big gap from memory. Any comments greatly appreciated. Also from memory there was definitely only one thermal pad yes?

AirPort Extreme A1521: Need Help Snapping Reset Switch in Place

Opened up my 1521 to clean and lubricate the fan spindle, and now trying to re-assemble everything. I’ve been stuck for way too long trying to get the reset switch to seat, it just will not snap into place. I placed the switch so that it just needs to be pushed about 1/16 inch into the plastic housing, but it will not budge. On the attached image, you can see that the bottom has engaged the white tab and is being held in place, red arrows. But on the top, blue arrow, the switch just will not snap under the tab. I’ve tried over and over again, but no luck. Is there a trick to getting this to snap into place?

AirPort Extreme A1521: Flashing Amber Light, Unable to Reset

My network has always used Airports and I haven’t seen an issue this bad yet. My Network is set up like this: Modem—>Airport Extreme—>Airport Extreme—>Airport Extreme.

They are all physically wired together after I ran CAT cable through the attic and down the walls. The middle unit in the chain started flashing amber the other day. I figured it was simply an update. I checked Airport utility on my Mac, nothing. So I ignored it.

Because my room is at the end of the chain, near the 3rd Airport, I started to notice pretty bad download speeds. I attempted to reset the 2nd, problematic Airport, to factory defaults. However, the reset button doesn’t seem to work at all. Though, I hear and feel a click when attempting to reset. After I was out of ideas, I returned it to its usual spot, and now the entire chain of Airports are all out of wack and won’t reorder as they usually do. I understand I can just reset all of them to defaults but I can’t reset this problematic one…

I went to best buy to get a USB3.0 to Ethernet to try and connect the Airport to my Macbook and reset it that way, but I see nothing when connected on the Wi-Fi/Network menu or in Airport utility.

When it powers on, I get: solid green, solid amber, flashing amber. And I cannot get any other light sequence.

Suggestions? Is it worth opening up and trying anything inside? I also think maybe lighting might be to blame, as this Airport is not on a surge protector and here in Orlando we’ve had a barrage of terrible thunderstorms.

AirPort Extreme A1521: Any standard errors on the mainbo. (no WiFi/no hard-reset (amber LED))

Hi together,

I've bought 2 broken units at eBay with different errors. In my opinion the Time Capsule-Models are made of better quality and don't have so much problems.

Unit 1: powers on, green light blinking, constant orange light. No WiFi but ventilation works!

Reset after removing power doesn't work > holding 6 seconds lead to blinking LED and after release it changes to constant orange light again

Unit 2: powers on, powers on, green light blinking, yellow blinking light. No WiFi! Ventilation doesn't work (cooler is working) and thermal-resistor is OK

Reset works but the same status comes up again.

The batteries were OK (3,09V / 3,02V) and were removed vor 5 minutes on both units. Unfortunately no success.

No connection via LAN to my router and no LEDs on my router when connected.

No water-damage or lightning-signs on the PCB...

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Successful repairs:

Unit 3: was a Time Capsule with a non-working HDD. Here someone scratched 2 wires of the HDD-connector which I solved with a special and thin copper-wire

Unit 4: was also a Time Capsule with a broken HDD which started all over again. The change of the HDD solved the problem.

Hi Dan,

sorry I forgot to write that into the text. No, unfortunately not.

It seems (probably) that due to an over voltage the network controller / WiFi-IC is broken. My router doesn't recognize them i. e. the LED's on the LAN-sockets remain dark when I plug the Apple Airport Express.

AirPort Extreme A1521: Keyboard beeps when entering password Solved

I have been using this router for several years with no issues. Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station AC. A couple of days ago it starting giving a keyboard beep when trying to enter the fourth character of the password. Password has not changed. This happened on both a 2016 MBP and 2009 iMac. I usually have the three Macs hooked up to it at all times and am having no problems with those. One is hardwired two are wireless. The wireless are a 2008 Mac Pro and a 2010 Mac Mini.

On the customers 2009 iMac I was able to hook up via ethernet cable, it is running El Capitan. The 2016 Touchbar only has thunder ports and running High Sierra. But the beeping on the fourth character I don’t understand. It happens when trying to enter a bracket “[“. I have no idea why this would just come up out of the blue.

UPDATE 9/19/18

I had a couple of machines come in that had been on my network before from a couple of years ago. They were not set to remember the password but had no problem connecting or entering the password.
